Hibiki Miyazaki
Hibiki Miyazaki was born in New York City, and she spent most of her young adult years in Western Massachusetts in a derelict 1970’s ski lodge in the country, drawing compulsively and trying to avoid math homework. She studied printmaking at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Hibiki has exhibited across the United States and her work is held in prominent collections including Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland Art Museum, and the Hallie Ford Museum. She currently lives and works in Portland, OR.
Artist Statement (abbreviated)
“I create colored pencil drawings on paper that explore themes of decay, rebirth, and transformation. There is a tension in my work between control and unpredictability, precision and play. Much of my imagery draws from the realm of childhood—its terrors, fantasies, and strange logic. I’m interested in how early fears and fascinations shape us, how they linger in the body and reappear in unexpected ways. At the same time, I like to weave humor into the work, creating moments of levity or absurdity that disarm or reframe the darker undercurrents. I see this balance as essential – acknowledging that transformation often comes with contradiction and that vulnerability and play can coexist. Ultimately, my work is about becoming—about what shifts beneath the surface, what breaks down and grows again. It’s about letting go of certainty and making space for the unexpected, the tender, and the strange.”
