‘Magical Animals’ Statement
The inspiration for this series really started during lockdown at the beginning of the pandemic when our everyday experiences shrunk to only our immediate surroundings. Daily walks to our neighborhood beach with my children involved ‘social interactions’ with any animals that we came across – from the smallest slugs to seagulls and deer. Each of them was given personalities and names, which became magical companions that gave us pure moments of joy in our tiny pandemic world.
‘Magical Animals’ is a playful expression of human connection to the animal and natural world. It is an exploration of the many human characteristics that we attribute when interacting with animals and how we may see our own faults and virtues reflected in our natural environment. Each painting was created in a mostly intuitive way that probably mirrors a little bit of myself in that moment.
