WoP – May 31 – July 6, 2025
WoP showcases varied expressions of works on paper by an international collection of artists. Equipped with different materials and techniques, the artists explore individual themes of memory and migration, surreal whimsy, adolescent anxiety, transformation, and the perhaps unavoidable tug-of-war between control and unpredictability. The visually diverse works share a commonality of individual reflections on existential themes that stray more into the terrain of delight than melancholy.
Exhibiting artists include: Hibiki Miyazaki, Vander McClain, Stas Orlovski, Julie Liger Belair

The exquisitely executed drawings and mixed media work of Portland-based Hibiki Miyazaki playfully grapple with childhood anxieties. The works interpret and unpack formative memories through dreamlike compositions and surreal, non-sequential storylines. Hibiki explores the “strange logic” of adolescence and how it goes on to shape our adult lives.
Vander McClain travels alone for weeks into remote geographical areas, exploring and photographing the isolated terrain and collecting organic materials that will become his subject matter. Vander records his discoveries in thoughtful depictions in gouache painted on antique geological survey maps. This exhibition will be the first look at his recent series produced in the highlands of Iceland.
Influenced by Russian Constructivism, European modernism, Soviet experimental animation, and found ephemera, the mixed media works on paper of Los Angeles-based Stas Orlovski contend with themes of history, memory, migration, loss, and transformation. His pieces give hints of faded myths or ideals once presumed the expected.
Springing from her fascination with all forms of iconography, the playful collage work of Canadian artist Julie Liger Belair blends whimsy and nostalgia. Old-fashion imagery and cabinet cards are contemporized with color and pattern. Julie thinks of her pieces as “alter-pieces for everyday life” through which viewers can reflect on a collective sense of being and place.
